Project Outline

Indiability 2009 – Insight

What are we trying to do?

To give young people from Dewsbury and Mirfield a chance to make a real difference in a caring role in an Indian school. They will deliver a major new project at the Manav Kalyan Trust in the Gujarat state in India. With a lot of hard, hot work they will build a great new sensory garden to further the stimulation of visually impaired children in the region. The sensory garden will develop skills and experiences for the Indian children using puzzles, swings, sounds, tactile surfaces and plants. The aim is to provide relaxation, encourage exploration and develop confidence.

Why?

The aim is threefold – to help community cohesion and focus in this part of Kirklees by exposing the team to a culture foreign to some of them and yet known to some of our local community, to help the children in this trust in India which is a trust chosen and supported by Kirklees Young Peoples Service who without this input would be without any help at all, and finally to train our young people (and some of their parents) with skills and attitudes that will help the local community in the future.

The young people will be involved at every step of the way. They are also very involved in the process of raising the funds.

What will we do?

The young people will be trained in skills needed to develop themselves and to help with the aspirations of the young people in India. This training will be led by Kirklees Young Peoples Service and will cover all aspects of cultural awareness, the challenges posed by the pupils at the school in India and skills useful in the local area.

What do we need?

We need to raise the best part of £18,000. We have planned lots of events that you can sponsor, attend or donate to.
